In June 2015, a man embarked on a journey from Bangladesh to London solely to support his friends and colleagues by attending the inauguration of the British Bangladeshi Caterers Association (BBCA), an organisation founded to support the UK’s curry industry. This man, Alhaj Manik Miah, embodies the spirit of the BBCA. It’s our privilege to honour his contributions to the BBCA, the community, and humanity at large through this article.
Manik Miah moved to the UK in 1963, a time when the Bangladeshi curry industry was in its early stage, and halal food options were scarce. He was a pioneer, establishing a restaurant in Victoria, London, where local familiarity with curry and spicy food was limited. Despite these challenges, his dedication, friendly demeanour, and excellent menu won over many. Sourcing halal ingredients required him to travel extensively across London, ensuring that Muslim customers could dine with peace of mind.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War, Miah wanted to support the Bangladesh Centre, leading him to open the Star of Bombay restaurant nearby. This location became a comforting spot for those working for Bangladesh or visiting from the country, knowing they had a place to eat without worry.
Miah’s journey was not without obstacles. He faced racism, discrimination, and crime, including instances where customers left without paying. He was among the few who spoke out
against these injustices, seeking assistance from local police. His efforts, along with others, eventually led to better protection for restaurant owners from theft and criminal activities.
Now nearing 90, Alhaj Manik Miah’s contributions are immeasurable. He has dedicated his life to serving the Bangladeshi community in the UK. His roles have included serving as the southeast region President of the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council in the UK (GSC), senior Vice President of the Bangladesh Caterers Association, a permanent member of the Bangladesh Centre, and a general member of the BBCA. Additionally, he has been involved in various charitable organisations.
This article is a token of our gratitude for all that Alhaj Manik Miah has done for Bangladesh, Bengali restaurateurs, and the BBCA. We extend our best wishes for his health and a peaceful life ahead.
